To be honest, Danny Mahealani wasn't too sure how he felt about this whole 'you have to do cross country' thing during the fall. There was no way the teenager was going to get 'fat' as Coach had phrased it. Plus, he is the goalie, it's not like he really needed to do all of that running. Yet that logic didn't seem to reach the Coach's ears, so Danny found himself sitting just outside of the woods in his parked car, trying to motivate himself to get out. It would be a lie to say that Danny didn't know how to run. He could run, he ran on the tread mill for ten minutes, he could handle the turf field, hell, he could do sprints but endurance on some beaten pathway? Well, he wasn't so sure.
The dread alone from that had actually caused Danny to skip out on the past two practices. But he knew it would only be for so long before his absences would start to take notice, after all, everybody on the team had to do cross country. A sigh escaped the teenager now, clearly admitting defeat as he opened up the door to his car and got out. A gentle breeze hit him and as brown eyes looked to the trees now, he watched how the leaves moved. The hues of reds, oranges, and yellows moving in the breeze made it look as if the trees were on fire. It was actually quite beautiful when he wasn't reminded how he was going to running through it about five minutes.
Danny knew he was probably being over dramatic, if anything, this was a test run to see how much he was going to die during cross country, or to even see if he could remotely remember how to comprehend running three miles consecutively. The teenager shifted his weight from one foot to another, as even know he felt like this would prolong what he needed to do. Truth was though, he needed to stop this. He picked out the woods to run in purely because the likelihood of actually running into somebody he knew was slim to none. Of course, he also thought he would never end up in detention and that happened a few days ago. Shaking his head, Danny just put his headphones in his ears now before he took off.
Like clock work, it only took twelve minutes into his run before the teenager felt his muscles start to burn and protest against this madness that he had set out on. But a sheer amount of stubbornness caused Danny to not falter his pace just yet as he continued down the trails, ignoring the burn. His iPod only helped the matters, mostly because he felt himself getting lost in Paramore, Avicii, and Skrillex rather than his thoughts about how much he just hated his life at that very moment. The reestablishment of the resentment for endurance running was crawling in slowly though until it completely took over.
It only took a matter of seconds before Danny's stride broke and stopped abruptly. His muscles were screaming at him as he stood and caused a lack of any sort of motivation to move. The teenager's sides heaved, never before had he heard his breath so labored. Not even after sprints. Of course, this is what happened when someone was out of practice when it came to this type of running. Bringing up his arms behind his head, Danny merely allowed them to rest there, trying to make breathing easier. And then it happened, that moment when he felt like he was being watched. Brown eyes searched the trees in front before he managed to turn just a little to glance behind. And of course, there was nothing, "Get a grip, Danny," he muttered breathlessly to himself as he remained rooted to the spot.
