“If you flip the lever like this, your safety goes off automatically and you can fire faster and more accurately.”
From her spot beside the work bench, Jessie Coulter observed as Curse Jordan imitated the actions and then handed her newly altered glock back to her. Palming it, she felt the easier feel of it in her hand and smiled.
“Thanks, Curse. Like I said.. Its been feeling a bit off lately and seemed to be firing just a millisecond later than normal. Dad normally does this sort of thing for me but… Well, you know how it is.”
Watching her, the sandy haired hunter nodded and then picked up a tray of new bullets he’d been working on. They were something that the military didn’t even have knowledge of but he thought that they might actual help hunters bring down their prey.
“Here are some new shells I’ve been meaning to have you guys try out in the field. I haven’t had a chance yet but the more test runs we have with them, the better our chances of knowing whether they will work. Half of these are filled with mercury and liquid silver while the other half is filled with dead man’s blood. The objective is to fire them into a were or vampire’s heart and the impact will cause the bullet to explode, releasing the poison quickly into their system. They are lighter weight than the others I’ve tested so we’ll just have to see if they work.”
Nodding, Jessie took the ammo and put it in her pack on the work bench.
“I’ll let you know how it goes. Thanks again for everything. Gonna grab some food before heading out.”
Laughing good naturedly, the hunter shook his head.
“Jess, you know your always welcome at my place but if you eat my onion rings, I’m going to have to draw a line!”
Then, letting his gaze grow serious, he frowned.
“Be careful out there, Coulter, you hear me? We don’t need to hear about anyone else in a body bag.”
Avoiding his gaze, Jess nodded. She knew he meant well but she wished everyone would just butt out. It was her life and she was living it the only way she could. What else was she suppose to do? Sit on her butt and cry over sappy love stories while feeling sorry for herself? Sorry, not going to happen. Jessica Coulter didn’t allow any man to get the better of her. Not even if he had a sexy body and made her heart skip a beat with an easy that was uncanny. From what she’d seen, he evidently done that with a lot of women.
Sighing, Jessie brushed a lock of hair from her eyes before biting her bottom lip. With Trey gone and her father drowning his sorrows in a bottle, there didn’t seem much else to do but hunt the things that went bump in the night. Her own shots at romance seemed to have missed by a mile so it was much easier just to shoot some evil son of a bitches than think on everything that had went wrong.
Especially since she wasn’t exactly certain what had gone wrong.
She had thought everything was fine right up until she’d caught the man she’d come to care about being possessed by a demon. the When, where and whys of that fucked up situation still had her reeling. Was she really that obtuse not to have picked up on the signs or had the possession been a recent thing before she'd been forced to shoot him. One thing for sure, she hadn't stayed around long enough to find out if everything had been a lie.
Some things were just better left in the past and they'd been there for a year now. A girl had to move on with her life in some shape or form and Jess wasn't one to cry over spilled milk.
Shaking herself from the memories, the huntress sent Curse a brilliant smile before hiking her bag high on one shoulder.
“No worries, Curse. I’ll be careful. Give me a ring if you have anything else you want tested!” she returned instead, turning from the man and heading for the stairs leading up to the bar . “Thanks again!”
Reaching the upstairs, Jessie unlocked the door and then stepped through into the kitchen of the Pirate Flag. Twisting the knob again, she heard it relock as it closed and then smiled at the cook who was slaving over some cheeseburgers and fries.
“Hey Doug! You making one of those for me?” she called out, teasing the man.
“If you want one, Coulter.”
Grinning, the pretty brunette nodding.
“Yeah.. I’ll take one before heading out. I could use a decent meal and those smell good.”
“I’ll have it right out in a bit.”
Giving him a wave, Jessie headed out into the main bar area with her back pack tucked up on her shoulder. Since the door opened up behind the bar counter, she nodded at the bartender and then snagged a beer out of the cooler before waving some money at him and placing it on the register.
Not really paying attention to anything or anyone else in the bar, she edged out from behind the bar and then was about to head to a corner table when something caused her to glance upwards.
