First day of high school, well, first day of an American High School. She could handle this, it was probably no different than the schools in South Africa, just different accents and she was free to wear whatever she wanted. Nobody knew her, unless Melanie happened to tell all of her friends about the incident in the woods last night, then the whole school was probably going to think she was a freak and first period hadn't even started yet. The thought made Anastasia Conley sigh heavily, the annoyance already running thick in her mind. She'd been living on the continent of Africa her whole life and it wasn't until her parents shipped her off to another one did she end up getting bitten by a wild animal, “Oh, the irony Ana,” she muttered to herself now as the school bus pulled up to the front of the school, or at least, as close it was going to get.
She could hear the shuffling of feet of people trying to clamber off the bus now, and the teenager didn't even dare to try to shove herself into that mess. Instead, she simply waited for everybody to get off before bringing up the rear. Already, Ana could feel herself dragging her feet now though, as if she were slowly heading towards her own funeral. When her parents first told her what was going to happen (and mind you, she had gotten no say in the matter), she didn't know quite what to think. But now, Ana was honestly quite certain that this had been a terrible mistake. She hated adventures, they required too much effort, energy, and the general notion that you hard to work hard. Don't get her wrong, she could work hard, but that was only when she wanted to and many times in her life, Ana found herself being hesitant at the edge of the pool rather than jumping right into it. Maybe it was just the attack in the woods that thrown her off, some sort of bad omens.
The young woman tried to not think about the fact that she still had gauze and a giant bloody cotton ball taped to her side. Nor the fact that she was probably running on something close to five hours of sleep since she spent half her night crying in the hospital while getting some stupid rabies shots. A shutter ran through her spine, not wishing to ever go through that again. Even more so, her alarm seemed abnormally loud today, and the fact that she could hear Melanie's phone two doors down the hall with the text messaging sound going off the hook, 'No doubt she was telling her friends about me,' Ana thought to herself as she headed inside. In fact, everything today just seemed really weird or maybe it was just the fact that the kid down the hall was chewing on trident gum. Wait, could you even smell something that far away? Had to be the climate change, it was just messing with her head cause you know, different altitudes, temperatures, time zones, people in general. So much change.
A warning bell went off, loud enough to almost make her drop her stuff and stand there right in the middle of the hallway, but Ana managed to bear it, just barely though. And here, she still had to find her freaking locker. Glancing down at the paper, the teenager slowly made her way down the halls now. Skirting around people and avoiding their curious glances. How she hated attention on her, it made her awkward and she didn't know what to talk about, which lead to unusual facts about herself. Such as how she couldn't keep her eyes open for the last thirty seconds of the dinosaur ride at the Disney Theme Park and really, who could blame her? She'd like to see people keep their cool when a giant T-Rex was coming towards you with strobe lights on. And then, just as that thought passed through her mind, she found her locker. A sigh of relief could not help but to escape her but her thoughts were also clouded with annoyance at the lock, even more so, her parents because in the end, until she figured this whole California situation out, she was still stuck here without any clue on what to do. It's not her fault she turned out the way she did. Maybe they shouldn't give Corinthia all their attention.
The thought proved to be a spark of anger that followed through into her locker handling as she swung the door open. Instead of the momentum stopping though, Ana heard the oddest sound of metal breaking and the door coming straight off it's hinges. She hadn't been expecting it, and it nearly caused her to fall right over as she managed to let go of the door. There was a loud clatter as it hit the ground, causing the noise around her to die and Ana could not help but to notice how awkwardly quiet it had gotten. All eyes were on her, but her own chocolate gaze was staring at the locker door on the ground before glancing to her locker. Ripped clean right off, that didn't even make any sense. How was that possible...unless, “Oh my god...they gave me steroids.” It was the only logical answer that Ana could think of, but wait, did that mean she was going to go crazy and start foaming at the mouth like Old Yeller? This indeed was not how Anastasia Conley imagined her first day at all.
