He refused to roll his eyes again and yet it was so tempting when his best friend was feeding him these lines. Although this typical banter was something that Danny had become quite used to over the years of knowing Jackson Whittemore and one thing was certain, he knew it was never going to end. Not with his reactions, they just kept on feeding into the whole game, "God Jackson, how could you see right through my act?" the teenager asked now, laughter in his voice, "And here I thought I was doing a good job too with hiding my lust for you. Was it when I allowed you to score on me during lacrosse practice that one day?" Still, even in that moment though, something seemed off. If it was one thing Danny had learned over the years about his best friend is that even though he was always confident on the outside and maybe on the inside as well, deep down, he was still like the rest of them, the mere peasants of the world: lost.
But whatever it was that ever edged at Jackson, he always allowed it to let be. He didn't want to push his luck with asking him anything personal. While he knew almost everything, the past year remained a mystery and that had been when everything shattered. Danny never bothered Jackson now with what was bothering him unless he decided to volunteer the information or on occasions where it was just blatantly obvious because of a person. Maybe though, they'll get back to everything. It like they were, Danny just didn't feel like testing that theory out quite yet. At the other's question, he merely nodded, "Nope, no one. We've known each other for how long now? Nobody can match me in best friend material." Not to mention, most of the time, he was one of the few people who could put up with Jackson and hold his own against his sarcasm or so that is what Danny told himself.
Although not this time, the mere mentioning of Ethan Reynard had nearly lead him into a spazz attack or maybe that hadn't been a spazz attack. While he was tempted to just shrug it off, he couldn't really. The whole thing had caught him off guard that now he just couldn't let it be, and here he had been doing so good at thinking about other things besides the boy from the library. Brown eyes rolled though at his words, "Yes Jackson, you're the center of everybody's universe and conversation." And even though Jackson's tone had been light hearted, there was still a warning there underneath it all and more importantly, he was avoiding Danny's own question: why? With no answer, he didn't understand why he should be careful, there was no given reason, "Fine! I'll be careful." It might have also been the most blatant lie that he had ever told Jackson, hell, it might have been the first time he lied to Jackson but when it came to Ethan it felt...worth it.
Thank god that he had managed to bring up cross country, steer them away from the subject as quickly as possible. And also thankfully, the librarians had given up on glaring at them. They were past the point of caring now it seemed. At the question, Danny merely nodded, "Sadly. As if any of us are going to get fat," he said with a sigh, mostly out of disdain for needing to do all of this long distance running now rather than any lecture from their coach. Brown eyes noticed how Jackson faltered just a little bit when his home life was brought up, Danny felt the need to apologize or you know, as if he wanted to talk about it. But then it was quickly replaced with a smirk and of course, Ethan. Again. Once again, the teenager sighed, "Ha ha, very funny. No. Although he did offer to be my running partner and I'm beginning to think that I should have taken him up on that offer instead of telling him I couldn't leave you but no, I'm here cause Coach told me to. Same as you." There was a pause before Danny couldn't help but to grin, "You know, I bet Ethan looks great in spandex. Can't wait to share my inner monologue about that while we run. You'll be wishing you never brought him up."
