But somehow right before your eyes
The sun light fades away
Everything is different
And everything has changed

Pierson was quiet. He was trying to actually think about that. He would rather stay with the Hale pack than have to go find another pack. He couldn't think of trying to go to another pack. Sure, there were plenty of ally packs that he knew, but they all had strange customs that were different from his own. He was already struggling to understand the Hale pack. He couldn't imagine having to learn everything all over again by trying to find another pack. "I just want my pack..." The small boy muttered.
Piers wondered why Derek felt like comfort. Perhaps it was because the other was an Alpha. Perhaps he was slowly accepting that Derek could protect him. But, for whatever reason, Derek felt like comfort. He smelled like comfort. He didn't smell like home. Like pine trees, dirt, sweat, and blood. But the smell wasn't horrible. It was actually something he was growing to be able to associate with safe.
He was able to calm down enough to tell Derek about his home. About his family. About his pack. He missed them, but he also liked being able to talk about them. And he knew that Derek was listening to him talk. He knew the other was quietly taking in every detail he was giving about where he came from. He honestly wondered what Derek thought of as every word tumbled out of his mouth. But once he started talking, he couldn't stop.
Pierson grinned at the comment and nodded. "The duck is one of the hardest tracking skills we learn as kids. Once you can track the duck, it means you're old enough to go on the Full Moon hunt. It's a rite of passage." His pack had many weird customs and traditions. He had yet to see such things from the Hale pack, but didn't doubt they would have their own soon enough.
Piers was proud of his pack. He really was. "Yes! He would like you." He was sure of it. "He would try to give you tips on pack dynamics and boring history lessons. He likes to think he knows everything about everything." The boy rolled his eyes. "I think he likes to hear himself talk, to be honest." He joked but was also slightly serious.
"Really? Your pack is just that different from mine." It really was. He was more concerned with being able to go on the hunt than worry about homework. He actually didn't understand the meaning of homework until Derek decided he had to go to human school. It was uncomfortable and he couldn't really sit still. Nothing mad sense to him. He didn't really have use for half the stuff he was learning.
Pierson nodded. "Dad told everyone to evacuate. We have four close packs we keep ties with. One in Washington, one in Montana, one in Eastern Oregon, and one here in California. If anything happens, the pack splits into four sections so that part of the pack will survive no matter what happens. If we all stayed together, it's more possible for our pack to be wiped off the face of the earth." And his dad didn't want to see that happen.
The small boy rubbed at his eyes. "We would all stand and fight, you know. Every last one of us, no matter our rank or gender." He glanced up at Derek with glowing blue eyes. "Pack is pack and we're raised to know how to protect our own. You must know it well... The feeling of wanting to protect your pack. That feeling with extends deeper than your rank. It's because they're people you care about and can't imagine being without. The thought of being alone is scary." His eyes faded back to their normal tone of blue. He had to tell himself that he wasn't alone. That he was with Derek. He was safe with the Hale pack.
