all about me
Matilda is... A sweet heart. She's scared and confused and most importantly, she's proud. She doesn't like people to see her struggle or to see her sad. She's trying to be the best she can be without accepting the failings that make it impossible for her to reach her potential. She'd rather lie and fake a smile than confess to needing help but this fact is what causes Mattie the most stress. She gets grumpy and she lashes out and she can be a bit of a... how do I put this... a typical seventeen year old? Don't let her cold, harsh exterior fool you, she is the biggest sweetheart and a total softy and she loves nothing more than cuddling under blankets with Nemo and ice cream, or playing airplanes with her nephew. It's her issues that ruin her, she's really a great person with great ambition and drive to succeed. She just needs to give herself a break.
history.
this is the story of my life
"Now, this is a story all about how my life got twisted upside down and I'd like to take a minute sit right there, I'll tell you how I became a princess of a town called..... Beacon Hills? Eh. It kinda works! Hi. I'm Matilda, Mattie as my friends call me and I'm stuck here, in CALIFORNIA! Away from my friends and missing my dad. It could be worse though, at least I have my big brother Landon. I was born and raised in Western Australia. The sun sets over the water there and the surf is great. My dad was a competitive surfer and it's been said on more than one occasion that I'm too much like my dad. The water calls to me and it's been my home since I was old enough to stand. Mom once said that dad was more keen for me to surf than walk or talk. It was just Mom, Dad and me until I was four years old and Dad bought home one of the boys that lived in the town."
Mattie knew little about him but it turned out he'd been in a foster home where they'd beaten him so her Dad being... well her Dad... said he could stay with them for as long as he liked. He was a lot older than her but they got on really well. Matilda was mature for her age and Landon was immature for his, it worked out great for them, especially since after a couple of months of him living there, her parents adopted him. It was always his life that changed more than Matilda's, she lived vicariously through him until her teens. Her life was surfing, entering (and often winning) competitions and early mornings at the beach. It was all she wanted to do. She wanted her face on surfing magazines and people to say 'I want to her surf like that'. Her brother however, despite the fact he rarely seemed to keep himself out of trouble, some how ended up happily married, giving Matilda a girl who became the big sister she never had. She was set. Sorted. She didn't need anything else. That was until all the trouble with Jorjah's family....
The first thing Matilda knew of it, Landon had been shot. She was terrified but couldn't be happier to find out he was going to be fine. All she wanted to do was cling to him so she knew he'd be safe from then on but Landon had other plans. Jorjah was pregnant so they were going to go to America where they were safe from her dad to raise their child. After he left, Matilda sulked for days, hiding up in her bedroom and crying, refusing to eat or even surf!! Once she finally got out of her funk she started acting different. She felt she needed to be stronger, more like Landon, and in turn came that rebellious streak every youngster had. She started going out with her friends all the time, coming home late. She was never great at school but her grades slipped further and further down and it seemed like they were in a never ending spiral. Her parents protested with her but the only time they got any real sense out of her was when it came to surfing. After all her father was her teacher and trainer and when everything else went off in a new direction for Matilda, she kept to her sport. Landon had been gone four years, and they kept in touch, not that it was ever the same. She stayed mad at him because she felt like he abandoned her. He was the only person she confided in, he knew all her secrets when no one else did. If he'd been there he'd have known she was playing up because she was lost and confused and that her grades were slipping because she was struggling but her parents just assumed she wasn't trying and the more they'd fight the more she'd slip away.
That's why it was her fault, or in her eyes it was. She'd been getting in trouble regularly, at school and at home, but the final straw was when she and the guy she'd been seeing were caught smoking illegal substances on the school field. She was dragged into the principal's office and given a grilling before they eventually called her parents. They were on their way to pick her up from the school when it happened... They were at a cross roads when a drunk driver ran a red light and straight into their car. Her father died on impact and her mother was in a critical condition. She spent two days by her mothers bed side, praying for her to open her eyes but she never did. It was amazing how much one little girl could hate herself, and the situation she was in. She had to say goodbye to her parents, but also her friends and her home and travel 11617 miles to California. She had to start again in the 'sleepy' town of Beacon Hills.
