He was going to be late. A sigh escaped the boy, annoyed at the thought from being kept from his friends. Brown eyes glanced over his notes again, trying to make sense of them but Danny Mahealani realized that he was past the point of caring. For the night at least, "Fuck Harris," he murmured. It might have been the most violent thing he had ever said. Special project his ass though, more like some sort of torture device. Funny how teachers lead you in a whole 'hey danny, i see potential in you so i want you to work on this type of research paper' and then it turns into an utter nightmare. Two topics already rejected, and now he was on his third. Plus now it was just hard to concentrate considering that he was an hour past the time he said he would have arrived. Danny looked over his notes one more time before giving in and shut them with a defiant slam. He probably couldn't have timed it more perfectly either seeing as the librarians were starting to kick people out.
Gathering his stuff, he threw them into his backpack before slinging it over his shoulder and headed out. Honestly, he should be ashamed of himself. Who the hell did research on a Saturday night? He could be with Jackson or more importantly, Ethan. Wait, did he want to go there yet? That his boyfriend rose above his best friend? The thought hung in Danny's mind for a moment before his phone went off. Pulling it out, it was nothing more than his parents. Brown eyes rolled, wishing that he had never taught them how to text. Honestly, if he had known that he was going to need to give them a play by play status of what he was doing, he would have rethought the whole 'oh danny, it will be easier to communicate'. Guess one too many hospital visits could do that to a parental unit. After all, that one after the club really had been the straw that broke the camel's back as far as over protectiveness went.
Pushing his hip into the door, it swung open but the teenager hung in the door frame for a moment, gazing out. With Halloween coming, the weather seemed to change as well. It was something that Danny never seemed to fully develop into moving from Hawaii, which was funny seeing as he barely even remembered living there. His gaze went to the sky though, noticing dark clouds slowly rolling in, the slow rumble of thunder and a flash of lightening, "Great..." as if he couldn't get anymore late to a party, the weather felt like slowing him down as well. Another thunder roll sounded followed by lighting trying to crack open the skies. Texting his parents quickly, Danny quickly headed towards his car now, quick to unlock it and open the trunk to throw his books in before slamming it before heading up front and sliding into the passenger seat. There was a pause in his actions, trying to think about what might be the fastest way to get there. Hopefully, he could beat the rain. Starting the engine, he backed up and slowly headed on his way.
Parkway would probably be his safest bet, even with some of it's turns. Another sound of thunder came, growing louder and louder like some dangerous animal on a war path. People always sucked driving in the rain also, but it was too early really for there to be any bad drivers and the rain was probably still half an hour away. Only a few minutes later though, mother nature quickly proved him wrong as a sheet of rain hit his wind shield. Instinctively, Danny felt himself ease up on the gas peddle until his eye wandered to the time, "Shit," he muttered. He really was running late, sighing, he pushed on the peddle again, moving his car just a smidgen faster now and daring to not ease up too much when going around the curves that followed. Keeping his eyes on the road, the teenager reached blindly for his phone, the moment his fingers wrapped around it, he hit dial and brought it up to his ear, "Hey! It's Danny...yeah no, I'm still coming. Look I just wanted to let you know that I'm running-"
And just like that, another car lost control. He heard it but didn't even have any time to react as it slammed into the back of his car, clipping the corner to cause just enough of a force to startle him but also to cause the his tire's to slip on the wet road. Danny dropped his phone, trying to grasp the stirring wheel but the car's momentum took him and straight off the road, and as he tried a sharp turn, it ended up being his down fall. The toyota flipped from the sharp turn, rolling twice before it slammed right into a tree. It was only a few seconds later before the other car slammed into his car again with such a force. There was a sickening sound of metal on metal and then the car frame groaning as it was shoved into the trunk of the tree just a little bit more. But the loudest and sickening sound was the crunch of the bone. The hit had been so hard that not even his seat belt could have saved him, especially with his angle.
His rib cage had slammed into the middle compartment, but that wasn't all, Danny all of the sudden found it incredibly hard to breath. The teenager gasped for breath right as a cough came up, and with it blood. And then it happened again, his body uncertain of even what to do right now: fight the cough or gasp for breath, his side screaming in pain. In that moment, he could only hope that in the crash, his phone had managed to hang up so the person on the other line didn't hear him dying. The ugly thought sprang the attempt of an adrenaline rush, like a desperate animal still trying to live even though the odds were against it. Already he could hear the sirens approaching as Danny struggled trying to move, scrambling to get out of his seat belt but it proved to be hard with his car contorted into some mangled frame. Every second too grew harder to breath, every second he just wanted to let go but he couldn't. But Danny knew that even with his adrenaline pumping into him, he was fading fast. Voices could be heard now, shadowy figures as someone cut into the glass now. They were telling him that he was going to be fine, but that felt like a lie as they put him on the stretcher. They were saying a jumble amount of words, but punctured lung stood out the most and just like that, Danny felt his eyes close and everything went black.
He felt like he went in and out, each time his eyes managed to open, he was at a different scene. In the ambulance, then in the white hallways of the hospital. Maybe he even heard Scott McCall's mom. It was a blur and he didn't even manage to stay awake because the pain was just that strong. But finally, he woke up in a room, dark brown eyes fluttering open. Tubes were shoved down his throat, and he could hear the steady beat of a heart monitor that was slowly starting to quicken. Panic arose in him, the setting both familiar and foreign at the same time. Danny used to think that people were over dramatic in tv shows when they tried to rip their breathing tubes out, but he could understand why now as he yanked at them, coughing escaping him again as they slid out and as his sides heaved for air, the pain quickly returned. A nurse was probably going to kill him for that.
